Earl Sweatshirt’s First Interview with Peter Rosenberg on Hot 97

earl-sweatshirt1

Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and some of the other Odd Future collective stopped by Hot 97 and chatted it up with Peter Rosenberg. Of course, plenty of the convo focused on Earl, recently back from his forced hiatus. But the “Earl” rapper didn’t offer much detail as to why he was kicking it in Samoa while the rest of his crew was blowing up and Tyler was his usual annoying self.

Odd Future’s “Loiter Squad” TV Show Trailer Revealed

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All may be one of the most critically divisive Hip Hop acts of the past decade, but that hasn’t stopped them from finding an audience. Now, fresh off Tyler, the Creator’s recent VMA win, Adult Swim has announced that they have picked up a new TV series starring the Wolf Gang set to debut next year.

According to a recent press release, OFWGKTA’s “Loiter Squad” has been picked up by the late night cartoon network. Although details on what will actually appear on the 15 minute program are slim, previous reports indicate that the show will resemble “…a mixture of ‘Jackass’ and ‘Chappelle’s Show,’” featuring sketches, man-on-the street segments and pranks.

The “Jackass” connections don’t stop with the show’s description, however. Dickhouse Entertainment, the “Jackass”-founded production company comprised of Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine and “Otis” director Spike Jonze, will produce “Loiter Squad.” Tremaine and Adult Swim Nick Widenfield will also act as executive producers for the show.

“Loiter Squad” will invade homes March 25th.

Adult Swim + Live-Action Series from Odd Future?

The crazy, typically unpredictable boys of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All are making the move to television with a live-action series that has been picked up by Adult Swim, the network announced Thursday.

“Loiter Squad,” a 15-minute series that will feature sketches, man on the street segments, pranks and, naturally, music from the buzzy L.A.-based hip-hop collective, will recall the style of MTV’s hit series “Jackass.”

The show is being produced by the creative minds of “Jackass,” Dickhouse Entertainment. Dickhouse, a production team consisting of “Jackass” stars Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine and director Spike Jonze, is also responsible for “Nitro Circus,” “Rob & Big,” “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” and “Wildboyz.” Tremaine and Adult Swim’s Nick Weidenfeld will serve as executive producers.

“Loiter Squad” is pegged for an early 2012 premiere.

OFWGKTA

OFWGKTA

They all go by a bunch of colorful alias’; Tyler the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, Mike G, Frank Ocean, Left Brain, The Super 3, Syd tha Kyd, Jasper Loc, and Taco Bennett. They range from ages 16 to 23. They consist of rappers, visual artists, skaters, rappers, producers and outcasts. They’re from Los Angeles and they’re taking hiphop community by storm.

They’re collectively known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) and they’re sort of a cross between Wu-Tang, 2LifeCrew, Ice-T, NWA, Murs and Harmony Korine after a 3 day beer binge in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, that only scrapes the surface of what they sound like.

They have a Tumblr which, since being active on February, they have used to self-release solo albums, EPs, and mixtures for free. They rap about raping women. Often. They say things like “swag” and “bitch”. Even more often. It get’s repetitive, but they have an incredibly infectious rhyme flow coupled with the heavy foreboding beats that Pharaoh Monch was known for.

The main leader seems to be Tyler the Creator, who produces most of (and by most we mean 90%) of their beats. Then there is Earl Sweatshirt, who after releasing his much acclaimed self titled solo debut went off the radar (rumor has it his mother had it sent to boarding school). There is a slew of other characters and degenerates in this group, but it’s a little like trying to summarize ICP’s Family based members to someone that doesn’t even know what Mid-Western rap sounds like.

Tyler said “I’m interested in serial killers’ minds and shit, so I rap about it at the moment.” and it’s pretty blatant on his song VCR which shows him kidnapping a blowup doll and videotaping the assault that follows (which is mostly him raping to it’s face) from his first album Bastard. There is something funny about the maniacal and over-the-top presentation but his longevity will depend on how much of his scattershot concentration you can take.

“Who the fuck knows, next week I can be rapping about oatmeal if that’s what I’m into. And for the record, I don’t worship the devil, I just hate religion.”

Earl is the groups ghost. Not much has been documented about him- except that he likes Eminem circa 98 and he’s the one “that puts ass in assassin” on his song Earl from his album Earl Sweatshirt.

The rest of the group take a diverse trajectory of being either the in-house stoner (Domo Genesis) or collaborations varying in subject matter (Ditto MellowHype, a collaboration between members Left Brain and Hodgy Beats). Domo, Hodgy, Left Brain, and the other members, including Jasper the Dolphin, Mike G, Taco and Syd Tha Kyd, are artists, producers, and videographers of varying talent but with one thing a-kin, they’re not your average rappers.

Check out their website http://oddfuture.com/ for more information including all their free albums which have already been mentioned here, and below for Tyler’s new video ‘Yonkers’ taken from his upcoming album GOBLIN.
