What is the Harlem Shake?

2013-02_LT-HarlemShake

What exactly is the meaning of “The Harlem Shake” meme dance that is sweeping YouTube right now? The REAL Harlem Shake is a dance from 1981, although it was also popular in rap videos in the early 2000s. It looks something like this:

harlem shake nardwuar

More recently, a music producer named Baauer released an eletronica track called “The Harlem Shake” In August 2012. In Early February, YouTuber Filthy Frank uploaded what might be the first version of what would become the dance meme, at the beginning of one of his compilations.

Other versions of the Harlem Shake followed. The “right” kind of Harlem shake features a person dancing to the song by themselves (a helmet helps) until the beat drops, when everyone else starts dancing and it gets crazy. Here are some of the funniest examples so far!

What do you think? What’s your favorite version? Let me know in the comments or on @laslice

Keyshia Cole disses Michelle Williams Again, Says ‘It Was Open Season’

rlCt6Gq3RIxl

Keyshia Cole is coming after Michelle Williams again, just days after the former Destiny’s Child member responded to Cole’s attack on her Super Bowl performance.

Cole claimed that Williams started the seemingly one-sided feud by commenting on Cole’s performance at the Soul Train Awards on November 25, 2012. In response to an article that said Williams didn’t care about what Cole thought of her Super Bowl performance, Cole said, “Sounds about right! Cause I didn’t give a sh*t what she thought about my soul train performance when she spoke her sh*t.”

The “Woman To Woman” singer went on to say, ”Gonna say this again. Michell [sic] spoke on me first. So it was open season to state my feelings on her. I always felt that about her. Just never said it until she spoke on me.”

After Cole’s original comments about Williams performance at Super Bowl XLVII, Williams remained quiet for a couple of days. Wednesday, she broke her silence and wrote on her Facebook page:

“It was an honor to share the stage with my sisters Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé on Sunday night. To all my ladies, we must learn to stick together and support each other.”

Whether or not that was intentionally directed at Cole or just a general sentiment is unclear, but it was done with tact — something Cole is apparently unfamiliar with.

Lady Gaga and Die Antwoord Beef

lady-gaga-die-antwoord

Lady Gaga and South African crime-stoppers Die Antwoord have started feuding back and forth on Twitter , leading to some of the strangest insults we’ve seen this side of “fairground stripper.” It all started when Gaga asked Die Antwoord to open for her on her tour, an offer they declined. Then, the South African group premiered their wild “Fatty Boom Boom” video last Tuesday. The clip, like most of the group’s work, is out there (at least for American sensibilities), featuring colorful crotch-grabbing, naughty hyenas, prawn-birthing, and some demented LaChappellian krumpiness .

All that’s classic Die Antwoord, but what really got Gaga’s goat was seeing an impersonator aping Mother Monster herself. The actor, easily identifiable as a Lady Gaga stand-in, is featured running afool in a number of unflattering scenes, including one in which she gives birth to a prawn. Because, you know, she’s a “prawn star.”

So, Gaga fought back the way she knows best: Twitter. “i fink u freaky but you don’t have a hit. hundred thousand tIckets sold in SA. #thatmyshit ,” she tweeted.

She followed that up with a second tweet : “i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you’re a fan. never mind! we get it, you’re not a little monster. WE GOT IT.”

Naturally, Die Antwoord defended themselves, writing: “lady… even tho u r ‘larger’ than us… we still cooler than u… plus we don’t have prawns in our private parts.” They also posted an image of Gaga’s tweet on their Facebook page, prompting a swell of support from tens of thousands of fans.

So, you’re up to speed on all that now. Take a look at the offending video below and let us know if you’re Team Prawn or Team Whatever The Other Thing Is.

Anthony Bourdain ‘No Regrets’

tony-bourdain

Anthony Bourdain has learned an important lesson over the last couple of years: You don’t mess with Paula Deen.

In a Q&A with the new Rolling Stone (in the “Big Issue,” which marks the magazine’s return to a larger format and reaches subscribers this week), the bad-boy chef, 56, admits the backlash he faced from diehard Deen fans was a little “scary.”

“A year ago, before she announced that she has diabetes, I dared to suggest that the food she was advocating was dangerous for you, and I received a lot of scary mail and Facebook posts,” Bourdain reveals. “It was the first time I’ve ever been frightened.”

The “No Reservations” host — who previously called Deen the “most dangerous person to America,” who is “proud of the fact that her food is f—ing bad for you” — says he knows he needs to work on reining in his sharp tongue.

“I don’t know what my problem is, honestly,” Bourdain says. “Why can’t I just live and let live? It’s a personal failing.”

In January, Savannah, Ga.-based chef Deen, 64, revealed on the “Today” show that she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago — and simultaneously announced a deal with pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk to endorse a drug used to treat the disease.

Bourdain immediately slammed the Food Network host’s new gig. “Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business so I can profitably sell crutches later,” he tweeted. (Speaking to Prevention magazine, Deen called his comments “very, very cruel.”)

In an April interview with “Good Morning America,” Bourdain made an effort to clarify his comments, explaining that he wasn’t attacking Deen’s illness but instead what he saw as her irresponsibility and hypocrisy.

Shakira Attacked By A Wild Sea Lion

Shak2

She may be a she wolf, but even Shakira can be fooled by the cute whiskered mug on a sea lion.

The singer took to her Facebook page Sunday to detail how she was attacked by a wild sea lion while on a nature tour in Cape Town, South Africa Sunday. The little guy was startled when the 34-year-old star tried to get a closer look and take a photo.

“Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me,” she wrote. “I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.”

Now that the Colombian beauty managed to get away pretty unscathed (she said she and her brother have some scrapes from the rocks), she’s taking a perspective like that of a zoologist to explain her rough run-in with wildlife.

“I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the BlackBerry I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it,” Shakira wrote.

But as it turns out, one sea lion isn’t going to prevent the star from enjoying the rest of her vacation.

“Today with the penguins! Definitely friendlier!” the star posted later that day with a pic of her sitting amongst a few of hew new winged friends.

Elton John’s Husband Vs Madonna

elton_john_wid

David Furnish was not happy about Madonna’s Golden Globes win for Best Song, writing on Facebook, “Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!…Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it’s narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”

Earlier, on the red carpet, Elton had given an interview to Carson Daly in which he proclaimed, “Madonna hasn’t got a f**king chance.”

Carson Daly responded “Those are fighting words.”

Answered Elton: “They’re accurate words.”

‘Teen Mom 2′ Star Jenelle Evans Arrested for Harassing Ex-Roommate

Jenelle

Jenelle Evans’ New Year is off to an unpromising start.

The “Teen Mom 2″ star, 20, was arrested Tuesday morning in Brunswick County, N.C., for “communicating threats” and making “harassing phone calls” to her ex-roommate Hannah Inman.

E! News reports that Evans posted a $1,000 bond and was released. Her attorney, Dustin Sullivan, said to Starcasm.net “these charges against Jenelle are completely absurd and retaliatory in nature.”

Evans explained her side of the situation in a lengthy, typo-laden Facebook post.

“Yes I was arrested again. It’s okay, Hannah’s just calling her own bluffs,” Evans wrote. “How can I harass u with phone calls when u clearly don’t own a cell phone? I’ve dropped this argument weeks ago. Haven’t been paying attention to u but u have the balls to tell yr little ‘fans’.. ‘imma f—— kill that bitch’ ?! How’s [sic] threatening who here ?!”

The young mother is already on probation for a 2011 street fight with another woman.

Google Tweaks Search To Boost Google+, And Rivals Get Angry

search

Social media has become a huge part of how people experience the web. So it’s not surprising that Google’s move to integrate “personal results” into its web searches — drawing from a user’s Google+ profile — wasn’t praised by the folks who run rival social networks.

While Google’s move was widely seen as a way to help Google+ compete with Facebook, it drew the sharpest response from Twitter, which says Google’s changes might keep people from learning about breaking news via tweets.

TechCrunch cites a statement from the company, which reads in part, “As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter. As a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant (search) results. We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.”

For its part, Google notes that neither Facebook nor Twitter allow the company to dig deeply when looking for search results. And the company notes that Twitter canceled the deal that once folded real-time tweets into the top of Google’s results for some search terms.

On its corporate Google+ account, Google representative say they were “a bit surprised by Twitter’s comments about Search plus Your World, because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer.”

Google announced the tweak to its Search in a blog post Tuesday morning, promoting the new “Your World” approach by promising that it would add a sense of personal connectivity to search results.

The company said that would happen in three ways: “Personal Results,” that show things like Google+ photos and posts; “Profiles in Search,” which highlights people that might have helpful information; and “People and Pages,” which finds profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic.

Google promises that “behind most every query, there’s a community.” But critics say the “community” featured in Search is restricted to Google+.

Over at Searchblog, John Battelle says it’s a shame that Google and Facebook can’t figure out a way to bring a social element to search that’s both wide and deep.

“The unwillingness of Facebook and Google to share a public commons when it comes to the intersection of search and social is corrosive to the connective tissue of our shared culture,” Battelle writes.

Google made headlines last month when it admitted to — and punished itself for — overstepping its bounds in promoting its web browser, Chrome. The company bought ads from an online agency, which hired another company to conduct the campaign.

The end result was that some bloggers were compensated for saying positive things about Chrome. As a penance, Google downgraded the search ranking of Chrome for 60 days.

Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop arrested

bopcover

No, that’s not a typo. This sad slop is really named Zopittybop-Bop-Bop. The Capital Times reports that he was arrested last week after residents complained of excessive drinking and drug use near Reynolds Park in Madison. Authorities say he was arrested in another local park last April after police found a loaded handgun in his backpack.

According to Zopittybob bop bop’s Facebook account, when he’s not in trouble with the law he enjoys activities including “eating,” “standing,” walking,” “thinking,” and “diamond.” He’s also single ladies!

He’s tentatively charged with carrying a concealed knife, and possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana. On his way to the prison, Zopittybop-Bop-Bop allegedly told cops that he would eventually “get even with them.”

Jail records don’t list his bail amount or an attorney.

Prep video goes viral

foul

Connell (Wash.) High’s Cole Vanderbilt was a relative unknown in the basketball world, but all that changed two days ago, when a viral YouTube video turned him into one of the most hated players in Washington.

As the Tri-City Herald reported, Vanderbilt turned into public enemy number one when Michael Christenson decided to film a game between Connell and Highland (Wash.) High to prove to parents at Highland that the basketball league needed better officials.

As it turns out, the clip did more than just spotlight an officiating problem; it also made seniors Cole Vanderbilt and teammate Kennan VanHollebeke look like the dirtiest players on the court.

Someone apparently didn’t appreciate the fouls — the fifth foul is definitely of the flagrant variety — because before anyone could blink, the video had gone viral, with one website proclaiming Vanderbilt to be “the dirtiest basketball player in America.”
